This track is the work of Angela Winter as part of Rhizome DC's Art Doulas Project, January 2021. We asked for prompts from the general public, and we asked for artists to interpret the prompts. To read more about the project, and to see all of the entries, please visit

Angela's prompt was:
A small arched door, blue in color, made of wood. When opened, what’s behind? It’s down at the corner of a building on a busy street, almost no one notices it.
Angela writes:
Ideas for “The Blue Door” came together via this process:
prompt + meditation, divination, intuition + experimentation => discovery
In the making, I blended field recordings from streets in NYC and NC, flowed them into a field recording captured on an icy mountain after a shamanic ritual, then opened into an aural otherworld made entirely from vocals. I scrapped the first two worlds I created and started anew with the creative process each time. Somewhere in my meditations, the god Thoth showed up and led me to voice a spell from the Book of Coming Forth By Day (the Egyptian Book of the Dead). This became the third and final voicing for what rests behind the blue door.
Many thanks to the prompter for their evocative seed and to the Rhizome DC for hosting this intriguing project.
